Brave New Women hosted by Cecilia Poullain

Jan Roberts talks about why she became a historian and her focus on the incredibly important work of bringing women back into history.

Jan talks about one of her most important books:  "Maybanke Anderson:  Sex, Suffrage and Social Reform".  Maybanke was a driving force in the fight for Federation and the vote for women in Australia, but doesn't appear in the history books.  Jan's work redresses this wrong.

She also talks about her mother's extraordinary life as a wife in Papua New Guinea and how this inspired her to interview other Australian women and children who had had the same experience.  She was driven to get the stories right, in memory of the women who had confided their stories in her.  Jan knew that once these women died, the stories would be gone.  Her interviews are captured in her book:  "Voices from a Lost World:  Australian Women and Children in Papua New Guinea before the Japanese Invasion".

Jan's books include:

  • Remembering Avalon

  • Avalon Landscape and Harmony

  • Maybanke Anderson: Sex, suffrage and social reform

  • Maybanke, A Woman’s Voice

  • The Astor

  • Voices from a Lost World - Australian Women and Children in Papua New Guinea Before the Japanese Invasion
