Sonia is the Director of the Directorate of Capacity Building, National Forest and Wildlife Service of Peru. 40% of Peru's forests are old-growth forest, and it is disappearing at the rate of 30% a year as a result of burning to create agricultural land, gold mining, illegal logging and narco-trafficking.  Sonia's role within the Forest and Wildlife Service is to protect these forests.  She talks about the enormous challenges and some of the successes. She also talks about how challenging it has been to be a young woman in conservation in Peru
This mini-series, interviews of women conservationists from Latin America, was created with the help of Erin Hicks of the Centre for Protected Area Management at Colorado State University.
